A.M. D. asks:
In cold climates, how cold does it have to get in a chicken coop for hens to be uncomfortable? Besides the drinking water freezing, what are the minimal temperatures that chickens can withstand? I have four hens that I started in the summer in my uninsulated garden shed and now I worry about them with the winter coming. Insulating the whole shed is out of the question. I may run a long extension cord out to the shed to suspend a heat lamp for them, but I still need to know what is the minimum temperature that they can take. Thanks.

Best answer:
Medium to heavy breeds seem to be ok down to zero degrees F. In Bucks County PA mine were fine at 5 below with a little freezing on the tip of the comb. A strip heater set at 35 degrees F will warm up the coop.
