Cold sores Pregnancy
Cold sores and pregnancy can be a really dreaded combination. It is one of the greatest concerns for the new mothers who bear the herpes simplex virus inside them. This virus is not at all a genetic condition. It cannot get transmitted to the unborn baby automatically.It is a viral infection that can get transmitted by being in direct contact with the infected person. It can give a big health problem while a mother delivers her baby.
When a mother has an active cold sore and is about to deliver the child, the surgeon is going to go for a c-section delivery so that the baby does not come in contact with the herpes simplex around the birth canal.
According to some studies, it has been found that those women who have the presence of the virus long before getting pregnant runs a lower risk of infecting the child. The biggest concern comes when the virus is detected at the first time after getting pregnant.
Neonatal herpes can be however dangerous to the baby. It has been found that nearly 1000-3000 births every year are affected by this virus. It is a rare case and can be deadly. When a mother has the presence of this virus, she should immediately get in contact with a doctor. According to a survey, about five to eight percent of the newborns who contract the neonatal herpes get it from an adult with cold sore after being kissed by him/her.
No matter whether a person has an active cold sore or had it many years back, it is always better to get hold of a medical practitioner to get answers to questions related to cold sores and pregnancy. One needs to be extremely careful even during the post delivery period.
A mother should take every care to see who all is around her baby. An infected person should never come near the child as herpes simplex virus is highly contagious and can get transmitted through kissing the newborn. It is very important that a mother should be very careful during and after delivering her child.
